The process behind the physique.

Energy balance

The only thing that actually determines fat loss.

The physics

The First Law of Thermodynamics

Energy can't be created or destroyed — only stored, spent, or converted. Dieting is just this law, applied.

Energy InEnergy Out=Δ Stored Energy
In dieting terms
Calories InCalories Out=Δ Stored Calories
Calories In

Food

Solid meals & snacks

Liquids

Calories Out
BMR — 60–70%
NEAT — 15–30%
TEF
EA
BMR — Basal Metabolic Rate, energy burned at rest NEAT — Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, daily movement TEF — Thermic Effect of Food, energy spent digesting EA — Exercise Activity, structured training

Ranges are typical for a sedentary-to-moderately-active adult. NEAT and EA carry the most individual variation.

Δ Stored Calories

Change in Weight

The scale is a lagging indicator of this gap.

Controllable variables

What you can actually change

Calories InFood & liquids
Exercise ActivityEA, inside Calories Out

Of every term in this equation, these are the only two we can directly manipulate day to day. BMR, NEAT, and TEF respond to what we do — but we don't dial them in directly. We manipulate our controllable variables until we get our desired outcome.

Weekly average, not a single day

Why we don't react to one weigh-in

Change in weight is tracked as a 7-day average of daily weigh-ins, not any one morning's number. This smooths out water retention, glycogen shifts, sodium and carb intake, and other day-to-day noise — so what's left is the real trend.

How we apply it

The process

1

Set Calories In from TDEE

Daily calories are set from an assumed Total Daily Energy Expenditure — estimated from height, weight, and physical activity level.

2

Program Exercise Activity

A fixed fitness program is put in place to define EA — locking in the exercise side of Calories Out.

3

Adjust & Iterate

Calories In is adjusted week over week based on the actual average change in weight, until we're moving at the rate we want.

The long game

Adaptive thermogenesis

The problem

The longer a deficit runs, the more the body fights back. Falling leptin drives down BMR and NEAT beyond what the weight lost alone would predict, and TEF dips as intake falls. Rate of loss stalls even though nothing in the plan has changed.

Our countermeasure
  • Reduce Calories In progressively — planned step-downs over time, not a single starting number held forever.
  • Add in cardio over time — raising EA to keep total output ahead of the downward drift in BMR and NEAT.

Both levers move in the same direction the adaptation is working against — staying a step ahead of it, instead of reacting after the scale has already stalled.

The takeaway

Genetics, medications, and individual circumstances can shift the exact numbers in this equation — but no one is exempt from it. Everyone loses, maintains, or gains weight by the same first law of thermodynamics. Systemize what you eat, be consistent enough to trust your weekly average, and the math takes care of the rest.

What we track

The progress tracker log.

Daily weigh-ins, averaged weekly, so decisions are based on trend — not noise. Below is a sample client log shown for illustration.

Weekly check-ins keep the rate on track

Each client gets a weekly check-in where we take the data from the previous week — weight trend, adherence, energy levels — and adjust the diet and fitness program as needed to keep the rate of weight loss on track.
